Taos, New Mexico Area and Ranches

Taos which the county seat of Taos County, is well known for it rich Native American history and its art culture. The Taos Pueblo lies just on the outskirts of town. Recreationalists also flock to Taos to enjoy activities such as fly fishing, hot air ballooning, rafting, skiing, and even llama trekking. The Rio Grande Gorge lies just a few miles from town is a well-known tourist stop. Tourists will walk across the gorge bridge, "High Bridge", that offers a view from 600 feet above the river. There are several ski areas nearby including Taos Ski Valley and Red River. Also, the highest peak in New Mexico, Wheeler Peak, is located just a short distance from Taos.

Agriculture in the area has been predominately cattle ranching, sheep, and farming. While alfalfa is predominant, there has been a shift to smaller sustainable farms that produce farm to table produce and meats. The local domestic sheep herds remain a concern for the Rio Grande Gorge's Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep population due to the risk of transmitting disease to the more sensitive wild bighorns.
